Adding

So its not like I am already anxious about this trip but adding to it is the tsunami in Japan and the after effects.

Why?
1. because the flight i am on has a layover in Tokyo
2. apparently the tsunami is starting to have effects as large as spreading to other nearby Asian nations and Taiwan is NOT prepared for natural disasters at all (refer to the earthquake of 2009).

I'm really unsure if everything will be ok by then or not? And I dont like not knowing things. Oh well, my professor hasnt said anything about a change in plans so I am assuming everything is still on track.

I also need to get my Hep A shot within the next few weeks. I had an appointment today at the Travel Clinic but I canceled because it was cold and rainy (wtf? this is mid-march!).

I already registered with the State Department so I guess I can feel better in knowing if something DOES happen to me/my flight etc atleast someone will come looking for me ( i hope!)

I feel like there is always something to do when traveling abroad..I guess I should think about tackling the packing- bear soon, eh?!

Ticketed!

So my ticket to Taiwan was purchased a few weeks ago. NOW it feels real!

We are traveling from Atlanta to Tokyo and then connecting to our flight to Taipei from there. All in all its about a 18 hour journey and I am not quite clear on the time difference. I am probably more nervous about the long flight from ATL-->Tokyo more than from Tokyo -->TPE. Only because I hate being on airplanes for more than 3 hours. Atleast there will be movies and sleep to catch up on, on the way over.

We basically get in to Taipei at 9pm and probably wont get to our hotel until 11pm; and then get going at 9 the next morning. It will be a rough few days but once we get into a routine I think that it will be good!

Our second meeting is next week and it should be a long one. Dr H is going to go over EVERYTHING from packing, to the syllabus etc. crazyness

First Meeting

So I am coming out of my blogging cave to blog about my research trip to Taiwan this summer.

Yesterday we had our first meeting and I think the group is a good one! Alot of people are in the field of pre-med or public health and medical anthropology . It was surprising to see so many different people with interests in Asian culture who are not Asian themselves!

My main research interests are in the multiracial adolescent population and the effects of race (specifically mixed race) on mental health and eating disorders. However my secondary interests lie in the Asian population and how their culture affects their mental health and eating disorder outcomes.

There hasnt been alot of research in the field of eating disorders and body image in Asia until recently and that has to alot with the exposure to Asian countries and cultures to the Western culture.

This journey to Taiwan has special meaning to me since my mother is from Taiwan and it will give me a chance to get in touch that part of my heritage as well as pursue my research interests in that area.
